If somebody wakes you up without speaking to you [like tapping your
shoulder] what language do you respond in before you are fully awake? That
tends to be the language you were dreaming in...

I have problems if I do an 'immersion' weekend - because of the way I
learned to speak french. I can't actually translate, it has soemthing to do
with my dyslexia combined with aphasia. If I fall asleep, and a movie in
some other language I happen to have is on, I get programmed into that
language and have trouble shifting into a different language when I wake up.
Just like if I need to speak french, actually quebecoise - I have to listen
for about half an hour until my mind makes a shift, then I understand what I
am hearing. Very annoying - especially taking my mom to france with me one
spring. It engendered some fascinating conversations. One time we rescued a
german who was very misplaced. I could speak english and french, my mom
spoke english and german. Talk about playing 'telephone'! ;-) Since my
dysphasiaen getting progressively worse, I try not to shift languages if I
can avoid it. Very frustrating to know what I need to say, but cannot say
it.

Makes it fascinating when I do a russian or german movie immersion weekend.
Of course it surprised the heck out of me when I watched a movie in
afrikaans and understood about 75% of what I heard.

I read just about anything except german or non-standard alphabet [like
greek or russian] with varying amounts of dependency on dictionaries.

the quote starts here:
The most strange is when people ask me in which language I dream I am always
surprised, I can't recall my "personages" talk one language or other. They
speak to me or to each other but its always in a language I know, but I
can't
recognize if they speak Spanish, Swedish, English or what.
In my dreams we all know all languages of the earth and beyond...
