Jane Addams, founder of Hull House, a care and education center for the poor
in Chicago, and winner of the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize.
Jacob Riis, reporter for the New York Sun, who wrote "How the Other Half
Lives."
Both were very serious social reformers who helped shape social welfare in
America. They are worth reading to understand the historical context of
welfare programs in the US.
