Approximately 1517 from Brazil, although some sources place it on Columbus's
first voyage (I don't recall a mention of it in the Diario).  They were not
in general use in Europe because it took a hot house and a skilled gardener
to figure out how to grow them.  IIRC, there were some in the Medici gardens
in Florence, the Imperial gardens in Vienna and a couple of other places.
