[Sca-cooks] period cooking FOR children

Yes! They are great dipped in chocolate or honey and occasionally served
with nuts (or is that *to* nuts?).

Actually, we have lots of children in our Barony and in the cooks guild
(which I don't belong to any more) and there is always some chore or other
that is found for them to do. If ever a child volunteers for something,
find something for them to do! They will soon stop coming to ask if they
are turned away. Honestly, they don't care if it is peeling carrots,
fetching pots, rinsing or scraping dishes, garnishing is always fun!

As for how to involve small children and get their feet wet in period
cooking, well, there is always reading to them. And so many transcribed (or
not) period cookbooks have pictures! We all find ourselves sitting and
reading or browsing through our cookbooks so it is not some extra ordinary
chore.

I used to have a SO who had a young teen who was not very good at reading.
He did like to eat though. I soon found that he even liked to cook.
Killing two birds with one stone, I used to suggest that he go through some
cookbooks and chose a few recipes to plan a dinner. I would ask him to make
a list of ingredients we needed to shop for and, depending on how many
people were coming to supper, make any adjustments to how many a recipe
would serve. He would then go shop with me, come home, follow the recipes
and do much of the cooking for the supper. His teachers and his mother were
amazed when his grades in school started going up. Go figure.
