Hi Terry,

Yes, you are quite right, the commercial importation of bananas was
virtually impossible until steam ships and air conditioning. The whole
scheme for importation of unripe bananas into Britain was started by my
great grand father Thomas George Jenkins. He owned shops in Hammersmith,
a farm in Bedfont and special banana storing warehouses in Covent
Garden. One only has to take an un-ripened banana and store it normally
to know it was impossible to ship bananas without special conditions. It
just took too long to get to Britain, even from the Caribbean from where
my great grand father shipped them.  So now you know.
