I believe the basic premise above is wrong or at least overly simplistic.

The evolvement of the eyes probably has more to do with what eats
you rather than what you eat. Eyes on the side will work for a
carnivore, a possible example is the bear although he may be more
of an omnivore. Eyes on the side of the head are very important
though, if something is liable to be hunting *you* because they
increase the chance of seeing the predator before it attacks. Failing
in one case means you have to hunt harder. Failing in the other case
means your dead.
