The only thing you'd get from "fresh brewed" mead is a sugar rush... Now
understand, what they supposedly did would probably be classified as a "Quick
Mead" (Quick as in still lively, or bubbling in this case) ... but that still
takes anywhere around a week or two to make... And frankly, I never developed
a taste for it.

I could see Gruel, or at least ground grain as part of the field rations, but
certainly they'd fish or forage too, man truly doesn't live by bread (or
gruel) alone....
