Sir Hugh Plat wrote a treatise about food for the English Navy in the 
1590's. He was pushing dried pasta. There's an article in PPC by Malcolm 
Thick entitled "Sir Hugh Plat's Promotion of Pasta as a Victual for 
Seamen," number 40, beg on p.43
