The OED notes it as a sweet potato.

Reference is made in the writings of Francis Drake and John Hawkins to
potatoes which, by the geographical association, can only be sweet potatoes.
Since the first indication of white potatoes in Europe is from 1573 and the
earliest known white potato in England (and Northern Europe for that matter)
is 1586 and the earliest known common cultivation in the British Isles is
1606, it is unlikely this recipe is calling for white potatoes.
