I think lesser cardomum is being used here as another name for cardomum,
Eiettaria cardamomum.

What is being referred to as cardomum here is probably what Pliny called
"Amomi uva," Amomum cardamomum or Siam cardomum.

The problem is that there are a number of Amomum and Eiettaria which fall
under cardomum and the historical relationships are sometimes difficult to
chase.
