Regarding using eggshells to fertilize tomatoes, IIRC, the 
calcium/magnesium prevents blossom-end-rot.

Eggshell halves also make grand little pots for starting seeds that can 
be gently cracked and planted when ready to set out.

We always rinsed the eggshells, and crushed them and scattered them for 
the chickens as well.
