Related species, but not "a kind of."  Cardamom is Elettaria cardamommum and
is from southern Asia, while grains of paradise is Afromomum melegueta and
comes from West Africa.  Then there is the related species of Amomum, of
which several members are occasionally called "cardamom."

There was a rather extensive discussion on this list as to whether cardamom
was ever referred to as grains of paradise and in the process grains of
paradise was covered extensively.  It may be in the Florilegium.    If not,
I could try finding it in my files, should anyone want to go over it.
