I recommend pastry plates; you can make cheap flour/water/salt pastry, make it into plates and platters, bake 'em and voila you have disposable plates. Make it into bowls and you have suitable coffins for most any dish.
Sugar plate of course is also wonderful, but that is only really cheap if you get to a catering supply place and buy a 20kg bag of icing sugar!
