I dont know....it would only be important if you know about the historical reference. If you didnt then I dont think philosopher's stone would make much sense, considering what most people think of as a philosopher. At least the average american would probably expect a sorcerer's stone to be magical. 

If I thought about a philosopher's stone without knowing about the historical aspect of it, I would probably be more puzzled about the significance. 

It would work out when I read enough to know what the stone was for, but it never would make as much sense to me as Sorcerer's stone. 

Just my opinion. :)
