Living and Working in Seventeenth Century England
An Encyclopedia of Drawings and Descriptions from Randle Holme's
Original Manuscripts for The Academy of Armory (1688)
NW Alcock & Nancy Cox

In 1688 Randle Holme set out to write The Academy of Armoury, a book
on heraldry, but it quickly grew to become an encyclopedia of the crafts
and trades he observed around him, such as carpenters, coopers, bakers,
and musicians.

This CD includes more than 2,500 high-resolution images of the original
drawings, accompanied by 3,000 images taken from the printed copper
plates. It also provides an analytical table of subjects, a pictorial
thumbnail index based on the original published plates, and a keyword
index.

The EEBO volume which is up online has numerous illustrations but
nowhere near 3,000. This might be interesting to see what it contains on
the various crafts and trades connected to foods. By the way---
Randle Holmes is the author who listed out all the ingredients and
dishes necessary for a banquetting course.
Peter Brears’ list in the article “Rare Conceits and Strange Delightes:
in ‘Banquetting Stuffe’ published in 1991, contains a list of dishes
adapted from Holmes’ Academy.
