Actually, it's been done - years ago.  Appeared in Chemical & Engineering News, I believe, but I know I no longer have the original article.  The process was too expensive to be practical.

And instantly I see cutting up those ears into small thin bits and making
silkworms and forming a pouch.  Not exactly what you mean, but very best
next thing.
