When I was little, we used to chew it for the juice.  It is very tough 
and fibrous.  You chew it for the juice, then spit out the fibrous part. 
 We grew sorghum and boiled down the juice for po-folks molasses. 
 Mule-stirred wood-fired kettle and all <g>.
