9. RE: juniper berries in period recipes?

Well, not positive of a pre 17th cen date, but a
definate 1790 date, "Koch fur Gott" an old Swiss
cookbook publ. in Zurich and Vaduz by Bucher
gives a recipe for Sauerbraten that uses juniper
berries in the marinade.

In fact most recipes for Sauerbraten or Rolladen
include juniper berries and sometimes sprigs of
greenery in the marinade and sometimes while cooking.
Use sparingly though as the flavor can overwhelm a
person. I would be even more careful if you might have
an allergy to juniper.
