If PURE gold is used, it is edible. The body doesn't digest it and it 
contains nothing harmful.

However, many "gold" leafing products these days are just "gold" 
colored and contain metals and other things that are not good to 
ingest. These are bad for one's health.

So your lady friend needs to talk to the calligraphers and 
illuminators so she can find the purest gold leaf.
