[Sca-cooks] pantler knife/chaffer knife

Fabulous Feasts or rather not so Fab Feasts was right here.
No index.... so I had to hunt... ok on page 28 she says
as regards the pantler
"He used three knives at his own breadboard: a chaffer for large loaves,
a parer, and a trencher knife for smoothing the edges of the special sliced
bread that served as platters." on page 29 she adds
that the 4th knife was the mensal knife wgich cut the upper crust...

Brears illustrates a set of German carving knives from the late 15th century
but doesn't mention the chaffer in All the King's Cooks.

I'll keep looking.
