Jadwiga questioned:
But I found out that some people are uncomfortable sharing this kind of
information about our club. Is it just a personal difference (after all,
I was a cute spoilt kid and happily talked to anyone when I was little
too...) or is it a regional SCA thing?

-- Jadwiga Zajaczkowa,

:) Never let it be said that I am shy by any means. :) I will readily chat
up the butcher to get the meat cut a certain way, the produce manager to get
case discounts and special orders, etc. And I can haggle a deal with the
best of 'em. However, there are certain times I talk about the SCA freely,
and other times when I present it as a history club; an educational
organization (when doing a demo for a library for example); or a non-profit
doing a charitable presentation (such as one for a church). Perhaps the
church association has more weight here in the South, but I have found that
with certain personalities, it does grease the wheels more effectively.
And I was taught early on in my SCA demo career to never say 'medieval',
the more biblically-minded hear 'mid-evil' and we're off into a defense of
the group that assures the questioner that we are not Satan-worshippers.
"We're a group that studies the Middle Ages and Renaissance". "No, not
really like the Renn Festivals, more like the Civil War re-enactors"
(another big cultural reference here in the South)
