Onager (Equus hemionus onager) means "wild ass" (onos, ass and agrios, 
wild).  And , yeah, there's a stone chucking siege engine with that name.  I 
don't have a diagram of the mechanism handy, but I wonder if the impetus may 
not look like a mule kick.
