Several years ago this subject came up here. The overwhelming favorite 
then appeared to be MasterCook. I eventually bought one of their 
versions, although I've never gotten around to installing it on my new 
machines and never got many of my recipes converted into that format, 
so my recipes are still just flat files as you mention. I bought one of 
their versions which included a large database of recipes, but I've 
never used it. I tend to use stuff I've saved from this list or do web 
searches. Of course even then, as usual, I tend to end up combining 
several recipes rather than using them as written.
