One of my books shows an Indian kard dated 1524. My guess is that the 
design goes back considerably further than that, but I don't have 
evidence. If anyone has reproductions of Persian or Indian art from 
well before the 16th century they could look for pictures showing 
people carrying kards--although it isn't always that easy to tell the 
shape of a knife in a picture.
