My colleague Lynne Olver single handedly and in her "spare" time IS "The
Food Timeline".
(Virtual domain) http://www.foodtimeline.org
It began as "just" another web page in our site (March 1999) , but has
taken on a life of it's own. Excerpts from her year-end 2003 report,
below. If you build it, they will come...eventually...indeed.

Questions answered:
2003/2572
2002/971
2001/290
2000/152
1999/11

MARKETING NOTES
We have not made any special attempts to market the FT. Service growth is
due to patron demand.... References in articles, listserve postings, links
from other Web/food sites, and word of mouth also point people in our
direction. Significant service spike
caused this fall by Newhouse News interview/article on "5 Minute Rule."
FT URL published in a dozen major US newspapers & UPI. Our
GOOGLE placement (we don't use metatagging or purchase placement space)
is "food," number 13; "food history," number 1; "culinary," number 10;
"culinary history," number 1.

PEOPLE SERVED:
K-12 students/teachers, culinary students/professors, history scholars,
cookbook authors, genealogists, chefs, food writers/journalists,
historical novelists, museum researchers, menu designers, antiques
dealers

COUNTRIES SERVED (2003)
Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Czech
Republic, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary,
India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malta, Mongolia, Netherlands, New
Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Sinapore, South Africa,
Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United
Kingdom, United States.

.....
After five years of service we have a core contingent of "regular"
patrons and a growing roster of global experts to help us answer
specialized questions.
