Ah, but was that poppy seeds? The sap of the opium poppy was dried and
concentrated and used as a painkiller/soporific in period (that's what
morphine, codeine, and heroin are derived from- they're all "opiates"),
which is what this seems to refer to, but I understand the seeds are simply
a garnish and a flavoring, since they haven't any of the opiate compounds in
them.

===================================================

My wiseass cousin, as a young, crusading attorney, objected to taking a drug test because of the inaccuracy of the tests. To prove his point, he downed 16 or so poppyseed rolls one morning before going in for his test. When his shocked boss called him into his office to discuss the results with him, he told the boss what he had done and demanded that he be allowed to reproduce the results. After a week or so, he took the test again with clean results, then ate the rolls in front of his boss and was tested again. The results, of course, showed positive for opioids. The boss learned a valuable lesson which then could be applied to clients.
