[Sca-cooks] Another movie for the Food List

I saw a very interesting flick the other night, "The Triplettes of
Belleville". It was nominated for an Acadamy Award for Best Song, but lost
out to TLOTR sweep (and that horrible Annie Lennox song, probably the worst
thing she's ever done - it shouldn't have won, but I was rooting for "The
Kiss" from "A Mighty Wind" myself...)
Anyhow, 'Triplettes' is notable for some fine animation and an intriguing
storyline, but the reason I bring it up for addition to the Food Movie List
is because of it's look at "The Food Culture" of North America. Belleville
is a composite of NY, Montreal, and Toronto. There are hamburger joints on
every corner, and everyone including the dogs and pigeons are fat. Champion
(the much-suffering grandson) also eats a measured amount of a particular
glop that the animator evidently remembers fondly from his own childhood, a
mixture of potatoes, sardines and fish bones. (The dog ends up eating most
of it, but you'll have to see the film to get the true comedy that the dog
represents.)
I found myself ruminating on the whole treatment of food within a movie
that is not about food at all, and it occurred to me that it was a worthy
addition to the section "One or Two Memorable Scenes".
You have to be in the mindset for a silent film, as there is very little
dialogue. But, it has a catchy tune, is well animated in a variety of
styles, and has a pretty good story.
