ah..... in joke for the Lois McMaster Bujold fans here...
(there is a list for fan chatting... i am sometimes on it)

basically, there is a series of books written by Lois McMaster Bujold based
around one universe, in which is a planet (Barrayar) that is rapidly
climbing from feudal society, limited tech, to space flight after they are
"found" again (lost colony saga...) this makes these books of interest to a
lot of SCA folks.

a signifigant amount of time is spend discussing FOOD
some of which is very non period, some of which is quite suitable for period
discussion.

Butter Bugs are a bio engineered creation, they produce a bland, edible,
pasty substance.  there is quite a bit of discussion about how to get people
to accept it as "food" in a asociety which is quite xenophobic.  the book
centers around several plots, including the butter bugs, the scientist who
made them, and marketing them..... along with murder,gender, love, and
politics.....
the book is called "A Civil Campaign"

all her books are good.
she is a nice lady too........
