Lady Christianna,

Are you here in South Downs? And if you are would you mind teaching a
class on this subject? Perhaps on a weekend sometime?

Subject: [Sca-cooks] Heraldry and Food

Good, come help me this weekend. I got talked into doing a class on
"Heraldry and Food" for Collegium Caidis in which I will probably hand
out a picture sheet of food-oriented charges -- farming & cooking
utensils, food animals and plants -- and then lapse into cake decorating
with as-period-as-possible food colors. Black sesame seeds, flower
petals, etc. We need to start baking tonight or tomorrow! OK, well
it's probably a killer commute for you but oh well, at least it's nice
to be asked. <GGG>

Hmm, interesting topic. Will you be talking about heraldic
representations done in food as well? You should be able to find some
period feast pictures with someone presenting a food dish done up as
someone's arms, although I can't think of a specific example off the top
of my head. After all, it's only fair that if you're going to show food
in heraldry, you should show heraldry in food as well. :) I know I have
pictures (not on-line, but someone surely does) of subtleties we've done
in the likeness of various arms, usually groups or kingdoms, that sort
of thing. Don't forget bee skepes, pretzels (is that the City of
Bavaria's arms with the pretzel?), the leek representing St. David and
Wales (as well as other 'badge' or symbolic items that might be food but
not necessarily in a full coat of arms). Cool class topic, I'll be
thinking about other examples to send your way, which will have to do in
lieu of me flying to Caid this week! Christianna who will be getting
ready this weekend to ride down to my very first Gulf Wars next week -
with an offer of a ride, hospitality on the way, and a cabin to stay in
just off-site, I figure it will never be any easier than this!
