very popular out here at the golden corral buffet.... rather festive at 
xmas time too.

had my first piece years and years ago at husband-monster's family xmas 
party.  his soon-to-be sis-in-law presented a lovely, white iced cake with 
a red velvet ribbon on top.  when asked what kind of cake it was, heidi 
replied "red velvet cake", to which his somewhat snooty aunt peered down a 
somewhat prominent proboscis and replied "what fun!"

red velvet cake has been a comedic tradition since... not to eat, but to 
declare "what fun". 8)
