Some weeks ago there was a thread regarding artichoke/cardoon, appropriateness for use in SCA feasts and I maintained that there was a whole lot of evidence for it in the mid 16th century. So after a little bit of transcribing, some more translating I got a whole mess of information together. Of course it is 6 pages long, single spaced in 10 point font. Ok so there is no thing as a little project. So rather than taking up one heck of a lot of space here I shoved it on my website. It is at:

http://www.geocities.com/helewyse/artichoke.html

I will also be forwarding a copy to Stefan for the Florilegium.
In summary though, lots of recipes for artichoke, some for cardoon, appearance in lots of menus, and description of the two obviously distinguishing them. At least by the 16th century in Italy the cardoon was not equal to the artichoke.
