If you're asking about what would have worked, anything with lots of
garlic -- which is a potent antibiotic -- would have helped for a bacterial
infection or disease. Onion somewhat less so. Ginger has antiviral
compounds, so would work better for colds and flu. I have also had very good
luck with elderberry extract for reducing the severity and duration of cold
symptoms. Whether this would have been recognized back then, I don't know.
