found out that to distill alcohol, even for your own consumption, is illegal

Indeed that must be why everyone says that Great Uncle Dick was a
bootlegger. ;-)

Your Pops' still is probably in pieces in a scrapyard, unfortunately.

Truth to tell Pops suffers from PTSD both from Korea and his second tour in
Vietnam.  I suspect that fruit cocktail triggers unpleasant memories of the
Korean War, i.e. malaria, frozen wind swept ridges, frost bite, bugles
followed by mass wave attacks and bodies stacked up as revetments.  When the
earth is frozen solid and the dead carpet the ground you use what is
available to stay alive be it tootsie rolls or the bodies of the fallen.

Hmmm... I seem to have strayed in the main from food... sorry all.  Must be
Francis coming my way that has me a bit bloody minded.   Best thing is to
end this day with a glass of wine, some very nice shrimp, a bit of rice and
a salad.
