Greetings - if fruit is desired you may wish to
consider grafting -- plenty of info online - run a
google.com search for "graft fruit tree" - and don't
forget an Image search, lots of east to follow
pictures step-bystep - you could have plums, apricots
etc all on same tree - do maybe one limb of each and
keep it trimmed back, get 'just enough' fruit each
season, and no big mess in yard. Of course then you
miss all the fun of watching birds get drunk from
fruit fermenting on the ground :))

But - with just enough fruit to harvest - on a few
branches that can be reached from ground (no ladder),
and not enough to make mess - maybe your mom would not
mind too much about a few fruits on ground if she got
a few jars of fresh homemade preserves and jellies :)

yis,
Ld Carrig - frustrated agriculturalist
