Thanks to all for the suggestions. I was considering putting them in
a paper bag with baking soda, but didn't know if it was actually
effective.

At our events there's no smoking in "public" areas such as The Eric
and Merchants Row. Smokers generally do it out of sight, so i don't
really know who does. And since nearly all of our events are camping,
the smell of tobacco isn't particularly noticeable during the day,
and the nights smell like burning wood.

Adamantius mentioned creosote. I thought that was the smell left from
burning wood (or rail road ties and telephone poles)? Tobacco smells
different than burning wood, which doesn't seem to bother me.

It's definitely in the paper. When i brought them home I don't really
notice the smell much until i open the books. I had curled up in bed
with them, and that's when it became very apparent.

An office mate in LA smoked (this was in the mid-80s before
California passed smoking laws) and i was stuffed up with burning
eyes all the time. I assumed allergies and smog. Then she was out
sick for almost a week, and suddenly i could breath and my eyes
improved... then she came back... quod est demonstrandum... and i was
all stuffed up again...

But is no one familiar with this book? _The Food Chronology_? You
won't hurt my feelings if you don't like it...
