I'm originally from Chicago. I hate the cold. I can never wear enough
clothing to be comfortable when the temperature is below 20. I get
cold when the temperature is below 75.
At 75 it stops being painfully cold (i don't just feel cold, i feel
pain below 70) and it is blissful around 80, when i can go barefoot
without being in deep pain.
I was in Manhattan for not quite a week in mid-July this year. The
heat didn't bother me, but the humidity was rather oppressive. I
didn't remember it being so bad when i had lived there in the late
1960s... From what i heard after i got home, the weather was being
unusual for that part of the summer.
Last year we had more warm weather here than this year. Now, I'm
getting to be a certain age and i keep anticipating having certain
experiences that older woman have. Last summer one day i was at home
working at the computer. I noticed that sweat was beginning to drip
down my face. I thought perhaps i was having the first of those
experiences. Then i checked the thermometer - it was 94. So i opened
some windows. Shortly it felt fine as there was some air circulating
and the temperature dropped below 90. Later the sun set, and i began
to get very cold. I ran around shutting my windows - then i checked
the thermometer - it had dropped below 80 - no wonder i was cold!
West Kingdom A&S Tourney, a weekend camping event, is held at the end
of July. It's generally held at a different site each year. It's
usually not terribly hot here by the coast (it doesn't get hot here
until September, except for a few days here and there). While inland
a little ways it can be hot, it isn't usually unbearable.
This year it was rather hot. Many of my friends spent their time -
when they were not teaching or taking a class - with their feet in
basins of ice water from their coolers. I was warm, but fine. Around
4 PM i began to feel a little too hot and to flag a bit, but i wasn't
suffering. Turns out it had been around 110 most of the day.
Maybe i should move to Phoenix...
