Some folks in the CSA have been dismayed by the weight of the first box and
the amount of green leafies. This reply is great, and I just love the song
verse at the end, so I had to share!

Just a few words for those who are disappointed with their first
boxes.
One of the myriad benefits of participating in a CSA
(community-supported
agriculture) is that you eat what's harvested each week—no
more, no less.
What you get is less than 24 hours out of the ground, which explains
the
wonderful taste. Unless you garden yourself, where else can you get
that
degree of freshness?

But you also assume some of the risk of farming. By making the weekly
commitment, you may end up with lots of arugula, which you may not
like, and
have only a handful of strawberries, which you may love. But what
ends up in
the box depends on nature and luck. Some weeks might be lean, some
bountiful. Our faith keeps these small organic farms alive.

Those of us who participated last year learned a lot about veggies
we'd never
heard of and had fun expanding our menus. I think CSA advocate John
Pitney, associate pastor of First United Methodist Church of Eugene,
Ore.,
said it best in a song he wrote called "That's My
Farmer." One verse says,
"Now it's always an adventure to see what's in our share; The
corn and beans
and broccoli I know how to prepare; But burdock root and eggplant
would
surely baffle me; Except here comes my farmer and she's got a
recipe!" --
