Rumi is *extremely* popular in the US and has been for a while. There 
are popular translations of selections of his poetry. I remember lots 
of references to wine, but no mentions of tomatoes.

(warning - snarky remark alert)
Perhaps the modern Muslim redactors removed all the references to 
wine and replaced them in their Arabic editions with tomatoes and 
tomato sauce

There's certainly no reference to tomatoes in any of the cookbooks in 
"Medieval Arab Cookery" - i guess that's due to Western prejudice. 
They must get translated by odd things like sumac.
