i worked for a trucking company that did over the road
service for meats and veg. new york to nogales to
california to kentucky was the standard route. when fuel
goes up, the trucking companies have to pay more, so they
charge more. so to make up for the increase of 25 cents a
mile, the supplier/reciever (whoever is paying)... etc.,
etc., etc. and not just mileage... those reefers have to
stay the correct constant temp or food spoils and you wind
up paying for the loss.
food prices will go up. how much, who's to say, but there
are very few suppliers or receivers who will pay more for
a service without handing in down to their cost. at least
the national chains.
superstores like walmart can make up for paying higher
shipping fees by adding one cent all over the store.
albertsons, smiths and (insert yours here) don't have
grey areas like camping gear and bedspreads and tires to
stretch the cost over. but then too, everything will go
up.
i remember the rationing days, and everyone complaining
how EVERYTHING was getting more expensive. yep, it's all
connected.
comparison shopping is going to be more important than
ever.
