Here's the way I've always done it. First, if you haven't already wash and
dry it well, this is to remove any protective film and all other stuff
that's not edible. While I know many people know this, I still think it
needs to be said.

Then rub it with a thin layer of something like Crisco, inside and out. You
can use plain veg oil but I think that doesn't coat as well. Now heat it in
a fairly hot oven (around 375) for about 3 hours. (Yes this does smoke but
I'm happy to say that I've used a grill, campfire, other-fire, and it's
worked just as well. Just don't get it too hot or the oil will just burn
away.)

Do this about three more times and you shouldn't have any problems. And for
any nosey types (like myself) who may not know. Basically what you're doing
is causing the oil to polymerize and form a film on the raw iron. So after
this don't let soap touch it unless you really, really need to. Just scrub
with hot water to clean. Soap pulls the oil out of the pores in the metal.
So if you clean it well with soap you might as well get a wire brush and
start the whole process over.

Hope This Helps,
James P.

Oh goody! That's so encouraging, thank you everyone. :)

I've got a month, then, to cure it. Does anyone here have any favored
methods of curing a brand new one?

Thanks again!
