An interesting perspective. :-)

However, since our stated purpose is to re-create the Middle Ages, we 
should look to them for guidance. As I see no evidence in the Middle Ages 
for a troll serving to keep a gate or collect monies for meals, I doubt 
that calling such persons after a fairy-tale creature is appropriate.

According to the 14th and 15th century texts I've been working with, the 
proper name for the role is 'porter'. The porter keeps the gates, and 
handles cloakroom duties. He also keeps charge of miscreants until they are 
taken into custody by the lord's law enforcement officials.

Besides, trolls and ogres aren't the same creature. Any decent wizard knows 
that. ;-)
