You might look at NeoOffice; it's a variant on Open Office (as in  
Open Source) that doesn't require an X11 installation. If you're  
using OS X as a simple replacement for the old Mac OS (and not  
getting all Unix-geekey, I mean), it's probably what you want, and  
would probably do the job.
