Please allow me, as the one who first posted about "not meaning to step
on your First Amendment rights," to explain why the "bulk delete" and
other mechanisms are inadequate and inappropriate.

In order to engage in "bulk delete" or filters, my email server (run by
myself, not by Yahoo, Google/Gmail, Microsoft's Hotmail or other
commercial entity) must first download all the email from the mail
exchange (MX) host, chewing up inbound bandwidth on my DSL line.  It
then has to be downloaded by my client, chewing up CPU and I/O resources
on my email server as well as my PC.  Then, my client has to sift
through the content and headers, determining what is to be filtered and
what is not to be filtered.

This takes up time and resources.  When I subscribe to a list with a
specific topic, I expect to receive occasional off-topic email, but the
bulk I expect to be related to the topic, at least marginally.  When an
off-topic thread becomes list-consuming, I then must take time and
resources to deal with it, whether it is by "bulk-deleting" it or via a
filter.

As far as First Amendment rights, please remember, the First Amendment
only applies to the government, not to individuals.  You may *not* come
in my house and say anything you wish.  Especially if I deem it vulgar
or inappropriate for my children or offensive to my own sensibilities.

Asking that we keep the discussions on-topic and about cooking is
appropriate, as Papa Gunthar and the list are *not* the government, he
is a private entity and the list under his control.  We are in his house
by invitation.  We have responsibilities as guests to not abuse our
host's good will.
