Harry, when alone in Dumbledore's office later on, asks the Hat about it. 
The Hat says it sticks to its original thought, that Harry would have done 
well in either House, but he was placed in Gryffindor because that was where 
he WANTED to be, implying that personality is important as well as 
abilities.
