In tracking down the veracity of the theory of mistranslation is to find out
the earliest known "French" use of poudre duc and see what Italian texts are
conteporary . . . or even find earliest Italian references to find out what
they actually are written as.  I don't have that actual burning desire, but
in terms of successful strategies to track the etimology of Duke's Powder,
that seems to be the general direction to head, rather than 1500's texts
that have already propagated whatever translation error/accuracy was first
created.
