our family never did that, altho santa was expected. 
 presents appeared under the tree christmas morning.

my parents were lucky that i was not a particularly 
curious child.  there weren't many places to hide them in 
the house i grew up in.  as i recall, in our family, 
practical things came from parents and relatives, and toys 
came from santa.   ;)
