I've e-mailed a Canadian author I have contact with, who doesn't have the 
answer, but is quite intrigued.  She's forwarding the question on to some 
people she knows who write "historical stuff" and another who collects 
Canadian trivia.  She says

>Really, isn't it tragic we lose pieces of our past over time because words

So I hope to have an answer.
