Bear...

I THOUGHT we were discussing Cold Cereal...
Did I miss something?
If we have moved on, you can ignore the rest of this letter.

If not...

In that case the progression of MilkSops to cold cerial
with milk is more logical and supported than the progression
of gruel/oatmeal to cold cereal...

Items...

1) Milk sops and Milktoast are traditional invalids food,
and so it makes sense that Graham and Kellogg (who after
all ran Sanatoria and health "spas") would have familiarity
with that food as being more "heathy".
Yes Gruel is also a traditional invalid's food...
But you still have to show a link to adding milk to
gruel/oatmeal, which is back to the same problem. Aside
from texture, milk sops are not much different, as I said,
from Grapenuts.

2) One of the earliest known prepackaged Cold Cereals for
serving in milk was "granula", made from unleavened baked
sheets made of Graham flour broken into small pieces...
Granules of Graham cracker.. Hence the name.

Do a google search on Dr. James C. Jackson or "granula".

The first packaged cold cereals for eating with milk were
functionally not much different from Graham flour milk toast.
So I can't see why you would discount that linkage.

2) They are already processed grain products that are
prepared cold and dry and served with milk, like Modern
Cold Cereals

3) Kellog and CW Post two of the original mass producers of
cold cereal for serving with milk ran or stayed at the San,
where the diet was artificailly restricted for "health
purposes".
They followed Graham's vegetarian dietary guidelines and
Graham frequently advocated milksops with whole grain or
high bran Graham flour cracker as a breakfast

I do not think that that is a linkage that is easily
tossed aside.

Upon the hempen tackle ship-boys climbing;
Hear the shrill whistle which doth order give
To sounds confused; behold the threaden sails,
Borne with the invisible and creeping wind,
Draw the huge bottoms through the furrow'd sea,
Breasting the lofty surge: O, do but think
You stand upon the ravage and behold
A city on the inconstant billows dancing;
For so appears this fleet majestical,
Holding due course to Harfleur.
