[Sca-cooks] Food for events

If you don't cook, there are a number of low-maintenance things that can be picked up from the supermarket. Look for whole loaves of bread in the bakery, white cheeses (yellow is a more modern invention), fresh or dried fruit, cured meats like salami, and nuts. You may be able to find sugared nuts, too. Hard-boiled eggs keep out of refrigeration for a few hours. For drinks, we usually pack bottled water.

If you do cook, then the meat pies suggested by others are a good option - the crusts have a preservative effect on the contents. Fruits stewed in syrup (e.g.peeres in confit - that's pears in sugar, not *peers* in sugar, heh!) are good; sugar is a great preservative. Gyngerbrede is a great keeper and a nice sweet; you could also try Hais from Cariadoc's Miscellany. If the site's alcohol-friendly, hyppocras is a favorite drink.

If you can manage some refrigeration, all's the better - consider whole roasted chickens; smoked fish is a favorite in our camp. Your cheese and eggs might be more palatable out of the cooler, too.

In period, breakfast was often leftovers from the previous night's supper, so consider that you don't necessarily have to find the period equivalent of Cheerios for breakfast. My little boy happily eats leftovers for breakfast when we're camping.
