I have not replied to date, not from your lack of any SCA rank, but my lack
of interest and information regarding the topic in question as it realtes to
food.  I find it personally and intellectually "trendy" and not so much of
value to my personal efforts as a scholarly pursuit.  I find overwhelming
information and resources regarding the times and places I follow, and feel
no need to make up the feast caravan; that gets trendy every now and again
in our area as an excuse to do some sort of Indian and Chinese foods at a
feast.  The documentable food/cooking resources get sketchier for us
English-speakers the farther east you travel, so I wait for the scholars to
put the information into a language I am able to use.  Until then, I have
lots of depth & breadth to investigate on the Italian peninsula proper that
eventually became unified Italy.

That rant aside, this list will give you the geo-political influences that
impact travel times . . . which is generally measured in years . . . and let
you make the definitive statements and decisions yourself.  My experience
has been that the people who have responded will not make statements of fact
on such topics, but offer the information they have and let you take them
and go to the logical conslusions you find.  To many of us, writing a menu
is a short thesis in and of itself . . . part of the intellectual advance of
our craft that goes along with putting on an interesting and entertaining
feed.

(If that was not the intent here to leave people thinking you wanted them to
do research for your project, then you may have misfired somewhere.  That is
the impression I am gathering as this thread continues.  Resources and basic
info given, then cranky when not "spoon fed"?)

I did not ask about the geopolitical history of Asia Minor.  I don't care if
it took so many years that your grandchildren finished the trip.  I'm trying
to put together a menu, not write a thesis.

What season was it when you got your ass kicked out of Constantinople?

What season was it when you staggered into Samarkand?

What season was it when you reached Beijing?

Notice that how many years this covers is not relevant.

Now if I seem cranky it's because I'm feeling very marginalzed by this
answer everything except my question.  (Maybe I should have someone with
titles ask all my questions.)

Now I just want popcorn and sarcastic TV.
